Do you know what a platform bed is? If not, don’t worry – you’re about to learn! A platform bed is a type of bed that has a raised surface on which to sleep. This surface can be made from many different materials, including wood, metal, or even leather. Platform beds are becoming more and more popular these days because they offer many benefits over traditional beds. In this blog post, we will discuss what platform beds are, the benefits of using them, and how to choose the right one for your needs.

What to Look for When Buying a Platform Bed Frame

Platform beds are low-raised beds with slatted wood, or metal surfaces, solid wood,  instead of a box spring or foundation. A platform bed does not need an additional support system if you keep your mattress directly on it.

If you remove the base or box spring, the height of your bed is reduced. Platform beds have a lower profile than other kinds of bed frames—typically between six and eighteen inches tall.

Platform beds come in a variety of styles, including low walls or shelving units on one side. They can be made of a solid block with small legs or little feet set close to the ground or they may have tiny legs and a slatted surface or flat solid.

Beds with platform frames are adaptable, as they may be used for almost every mattress type. If a bed does not obtain the required support, it will de-compress more rapidly. Solid or slatted frame platforms give the ideal amount of support for any mattress type.

Platform Beds: What They Are and How They’re Different

Platform beds are available in a range of styles, including upholstered, storage,  headboard/footboard, floating surface, classic, and metallic.

The beautiful wooden platform bed

A typical platform bed does not have a footboard or headboard. It’s a straightforward bed frame that’s frequently constructed of wood, particleboard or  MDF. The classic style is ideal for people who live in a studio or a very small apartment and have little room.

Platform Bed with Footboard and Headboard

Platform beds are becoming increasingly popular, and as a result, headboard and footboard modifications have become more common. If you want something more luxurious, consider a beautiful hardwood headboard and footboard. Platform beds with footboards and headboards are ideal in larger bedrooms, providing a touch of class to the space.

Platform Bed Upholstered

Upholstered platform bed frames are typically used in contemporary decor and modern. The upholstery color choices are numerous. Choose one to match your style, from bright pink, gold, red, and blue to muted beige, grey and cream. You may also pick a color-coordinated headboard to go with your upholstered platform bed. Platform beds in vibrant colors are another fantastic choice for children’s rooms.

Storage Bed with Storage Space on a Platform

Platform beds are often equipped with built-in storage. If you have a tiny bedroom but require more sleeping surfaces, a platform bed with storage drawers is an excellent solution.

Surface Platform Bed Floating

A floating platform bed, as the name implies, gives the impression that it is floating off the floor. A wood, particleboard, or MDF platform serves as the foundation for your mattress, which is supported by a rectangular frame in the middle.

You won’t be able to see the under-plank support structure from a distance. The concealed foundation gives the appearance of a floating sleeping surface.

Metal Platform Bed

Wrought iron or steel are used to create metallic platform beds. They are more sturdy than wooden ones. Metal rails, on the other hand, may put more strain on foam mattresses and cause them to decompress. If you have a spring mattress, a metallic platform bed might be ideal for you.

Platform Bed Surfaces: What They Are and What They Aren’t

A platform bed is a type of bed that is designed to be used as a base for a mattress. It doesn’t require a box spring or an additional foundation. However, if you want to raise your bed frame, you can still use a box spring or foundation to help support it. When placing a mattress foundation on an existing platform bed, be mindful that there may not be enough room for the foundation. If you want to get a tall mattress without having to buy a new bed frame, consider buying a platform bed with no headboards.

Solid Surface

The base material is often wood, particleboard or MDF,the tiny pores or channels. The channels and holes in the mattress allow air to circulate beneath it. A solid foundation may make your bed seem more solid than a slatted surface.

Metallic Surface

Metal rails on bed frames that do not contain a memory foam layer may put too much stress on the foam, causing it to droop.

Slatted Surface

The slats may be constructed of wood, particleboard, MDF, or plastic. These slats are spaced 2 to 2.75 inches apart for optimum support. Slats tend to be rigid and straight, although they may bend outward to counter the weight of the mattress and sleeper. Slats are widely spaced to provide a solid foundation while also allowing air to flow through.

What Are the Benefits and Drawbacks of Platform Beds?

Bunk beds, on the other hand, have their own set of benefits and drawbacks.

  • Platform beds are less expensive than other types of bed frames because they do not need the use of any additional mattress support systems.
  • Because of the under-bed storage, it’s also multi-purpose.
  • A slatted or perforated surface allows for better ventilation and more breathable mattresses.

  • A low position may be tough to get into and out of bed for people with back or knee discomfort.

Is it possible to sleep on a platform bed while using a regular mattress?

Platform beds may be used with any sort of mattress. Memory foam, innerspring, hybrid, soft, firm, and medium are all suitable for platform beds and panel beds.

Using any sort of regular mattress on a platform bed (or panel) is fine as long as the size is correct (for example, a King mattress for a King bed), and the base is designed to provide complete mattress support (usually meaning five or more slats).

Platform beds come in a variety of designs. Platform beds are more cost-effective than buying an entire bed set. Furthermore, these beds include drawers for further storage. Platform beds’ compatibility with a wide range of mattresses makes them very appealing.
